    This popular camping spot has undergone a lot of changes over the past two years as the province upgraded roads, added toilets and created a new staging area for OHVs.

    We’ll be updating this guide in the coming weeks now that construction is wrapping up.

    Preacher’s Point South Rustic Camping Area

    A pretty camping spot with great mountain views, easy access to adventures and amazing paddling on Abraham Lake in the fall.

    This spot is located across the bay from the main Preacher’s Point camping area with more secluded camping spots that still offer great views of the surrounding peaks.

    The water level fluctuates a lot here, from the original channel of the North Saskatchewan River in early summer to a full lake by early fall making it a popular spot for photographers.

    Over the past few years the provincial government turned it into an official camping area with access roads and toilets. It is included in the public lands camping pass, allowing you to stay for up to 14 days at a time for $30 per adult per year.

    Please note that motorized vehicles are not allowed below the high water mark or on the lake bottom from April 30 to December 1.

    The meeting locations for tours offered by Rockies Heli Canada, McKenzie’s Trails West, Banff Canyoning and Girth Hitch Guiding are less than 10 minutes away along the David Thompson Highway.

    Popular hikes in the area include Siffleur Falls, Coral Creek Canyon, Tuff Puff Ridge and Thompson Creek Falls. This is a good spot to finish a river trip from the Icefields Parkway or to paddle on the lake once the reservoir fills up in late summer. Keep in mind that the water is cold all year and that winds can pick up quickly as you plan your water adventure.

    Preacher’s Point North Rustic Camping Area

    This is one of the most easily accessible lakeside camping spots in the region, making it one of the most popular.

    Located at the furthest end of Abraham Lake from the Bighorn Dam, roughly 30 km away, this area sees large fluctuations throughout the year. If you visit in the spring or early summer you’ll find the North Saskatchewan River flowing through its original channel. Come back in late summer or the fall and you’ll find a full lake, often overflowing its banks into the nearby aspen trees and making it a popular spot for paddling and photography.

    Abraham Slabs Rustic Camping Area

    A central location with great views of Abraham Lake and close access to some of the best adventures in the region.

    This spot has some amazing views of Mount Michener, Abraham Mountain and Elliot’s Peak. It’s location near Cline River makes it a great base to head out on a flight with Rockies Heli Canada, a horseback ride with McKenzie’s Trails West or to join us on one of our tours.

    It’s also close by to popular trails like Vision Quest, Coral Creek Canyon and Whitegoat Falls.

    Allstones Rustic Camping Area

    A popular spot on the shores of Abraham Lake with cliff jumping in late summer and access to the Allstones Lake and Creek trails.

    One of the best lakeside camping option in the region, with great views of Abraham Lake and the front range of the Canadian Rockies.

    It’s a great location close to the many tours and activities available at Cline River, near popular hiking trails like Vision Quest and with the trails to Allstones Lake and Creek starting right from the campsite.

    Later in the summer, once the reservoir is full, it’s also a popular spot for cliff jumping but make sure that water is deep enough first.

    Nordic skates are the perfect way to get that feeling of sliding through our frozen wonderland with ice bubbles under our feet and mountains all around us. Whether you’re an experienced skater, or trying it for the first time, you’ll get to enjoy the ice bubbles and quirky ice formations of Abraham Lake.

    Nordic skates, ice cleats, a professional guide and our made-from-scratch hot chocolate and marshmallows are all included. You will be meeting your guide at Abraham Lake for this tour.

    Part of the beauty of playing outside is that the conditions are always changing, from bluebird days to the occasional snowstorm and everything in between. We’re out on the ice every day, so our local guides know how to find the best spot for your tour on any given day. This is a sample of what your tour might be like.

    Whether you’ve skated before or not you’ll have a great time gliding across the ice. Nordic skates are designed for lakes like Abraham Lake. They use a comfier cross-country ski boot and the longer blades make it easier to skate through variable conditions.

    You’ll wear ice cleats as we make our way onto the frozen lake with your guide taking you to some of the best and safest spots in the area. Not sure about skating? You can easily take off the blades and put on the ice cleats to enjoy the ice bubbles while the rest of your group tries skating.

    Before you even meet your guide for the day you’ll get to enjoy the scenic drive from Nordegg to Abraham Lake, making your way through the foothills and the front range of the Canadian Rockies. It’s only a 30-minute drive but we recommend planning for a little extra time, especially with feral horses and bighorn sheep often seen along the highway.

    Getting here From Lake Louise

    Coming from Lake Louise? The Icefields Parkway (Highway 93) will take you past Bow Lake, Crowfoot Glaciers and many other landmarks before heading east on Highway 11 where you’ll enjoy the North Saskatchewan River valley. It’s less than 1.5 hours to get here from Lake Louise we recommend planning on at least 2 hours so that you get to enjoy the views along the way. Please note that winter tires are mandatory on Highway 93.

    We get to play outside on our tours and that means you’ll want to come prepared for the weather. We rarely cancel tours due to weather, as long as we can have a safe adventure. You’ll be amazed at how warm we get when we’re having fun!

    Make sure to dress in layers and come ready for the unpredictable weather we often get in Alberta. Most days are between -15°C and 0°C, but we see anything from -30°C to +10°C on our winter tours. Abraham Lake is a very windy place, bring an extra layer with you just in case.

    Make sure to bring with you:

    • Winter boots.
    • A winter jacket and snow pants.
    • Tuque and gloves.
    • Clothing to wear under your snow pants and jacket: for example long underwear and a fleece sweater.
    • Sunglasses.

    A full-day adventure of canyons and ice bubbles

    Discover the magic of snowshoeing through a frozen canyon to a pretty waterfall and of walking on the ice bubbles of Abraham Lake.

    First up is a snowshoe that takes us up the Allstones Creek Canyon where the amazing rock formations mark our path to a pretty frozen waterfall. The afternoon is spent on Abraham Lake, hunting for ice bubbles, quirky ice formations and taking in the views from the frozen lake.

    A picnic lunch, hiking poles, snowshoe rentals, ice cleats and a professional guide are all included.

    It’s a scenic 1.5 hour drive from Lake Louise to Cline River, heading north on Highway 93 and then east on Highway 11. Please note that winter tires are mandatory on Highway 93.

    Getting here From Nordegg

    Before you even meet your guide for the day you’ll get to enjoy the scenic drive from Nordegg to Abraham Lake, making your way through the foothills and the front range of the Canadian Rockies. It’s only a 30-minute drive but we recommend planning for a little extra time, especially with feral horses and bighorn sheep often seen along the highway.

    Getting here From Lake Louise

    Coming from Lake Louise? The Icefields Parkway (Highway 93) will take you past Bow Lake, Crowfoot Glaciers and many other landmarks before heading east on Highway 11 where you’ll enjoy the North Saskatchewan River valley. It’s less than 1.5 hours to get to Cline River from Lake Louise we recommend planning on at least 2 hours so that you get to enjoy the views along the way. Please note that winter tires are mandatory on Highway 93.

    We get to play outside on our tours and that means you’ll want to come prepared for the weather. We rarely cancel tours due to weather, as long as we can have a safe adventure. You’ll be amazed at how warm we get when we’re having fun!

    Make sure to dress in layers and come ready for the unpredictable weather we often get in Alberta. Most days are between -15°C and 0°C, but we see anything from -30°C to +10°C on our winter tours. Abraham Lake is a very windy place, bring an extra layer with you just in case.

  • Belly of Abraham + Abraham Slabs

    Belly of Abraham + Abraham Slabs

    One of the most popular areas, especially with photographers

    The Belly of Abraham and the Abraham Slabs area are often the busiest places on the lake first thing in the morning with photographers looking to catch the sunrise.

    This has long been one of the most popular areas on Abraham Lake for the ice bubbles given the short and easy access to the lake. It offers great views of Mount Michener and Elliott’s Peak along with deeper stacks of bubbles in the turquoise ice.

    In 2021 Alberta Environment built a new parking lot at the random camping area known as Abraham Slabs. Many visitors still choose to park along the highway instead of using the parking lot, be careful if you choose this option with traffic moving fast as they come around the corner.

    It does get busy but with most visitors staying in the bay at Belly, there is plenty of room to spread out and enjoy the moment if you’re willing to walk a little further.

    Getting there: From Nordegg, the Abraham Slabs parking lot is approximately 40 km away travelling west on Highway 11. Coming from Saskatchewan Crossing it is approximately 50 km east on Highway 11. Parking and dry toilets are available.

    Head Out On Your Own

    Sometimes you just want to head out on your own to explore the area. We get it. That’s why we share guides like these. Keep in mind that these aren’t the only options to see the ice bubbles but they are the most popular and easily accessible ones.

    Accessing the Ice

    There are a few options to access the lake in this area. A popular option is to park along the highway at Belly but we recommend using the new Abraham Slabs parking lot. From the parking lot, walk down through the random camping area to the lake.

    Most winters you can drive down and park in the random camping area but make sure that your vehicle will make it back out before you venture down the road.

    Ice Bubbles and Ice Features

    This area is similar to the nearby Ice Bubbles Parking Lot and Hoodoo creek area with interesting features along the shoreline and amazing backdrops. We always find some great options from this access, especially if we walk a little further and spend some time exploring.

    Safety Considerations

    From a safety perspective, the access from the Abraham Slabs is one of the easiest in terms of mitigating risks. The slope is gentle with a gradual transition from shore to lake combined with no creek or rivers entering the lake.

    The access from Belly is more challenging and we often see visitors take unnecessary risks in this area. The shoreline has a few gullies where the ice can easily break, increasing the risks of falls causing injuries. Once on the ice, the water source entering the bay from the west causes weak ice combined with an often hidden canyon with steep shores.

    This gully became famous on social media a few years ago. The danger is easy to mitigate by simply walking around it.

    Blowing snow often makes it harder to see what lies underneath. Whenever possible, make sure to walk on ice and avoid snow-covered areas.
    The area where the water source enters the lake creates some amazing photo opportunities later in the season. Make sure to know where it is and approach the area cautiously.
