Glide across the ice bubbles of Abraham Lake

Experience wild ice skating on the clear ice of Abraham Lake on this guided adventure.

Nordic skates are the perfect way to get that feeling of sliding through our frozen wonderland with ice bubbles under our feet and mountains all around us. Whether you’re an experienced skater, or trying it for the first time, you’ll get to enjoy the ice bubbles and quirky ice formations of Abraham Lake.

Nordic skates, ice cleats, a professional guide and our made-from-scratch hot chocolate and marshmallows are all included. You will be meeting your guide at Abraham Lake for this tour.

The Magic of Walking on Ice

Part of the beauty of playing outside is that the conditions are always changing, from bluebird days to the occasional snowstorm and everything in between. We’re out on the ice every day, so our local guides know how to find the best spot for your tour on any given day. This is a sample of what your tour might be like.

Whether you’ve skated before or not you’ll have a great time gliding across the ice. Nordic skates are designed for lakes like Abraham Lake. They use a comfier cross-country ski boot and the longer blades make it easier to skate through variable conditions.

You’ll wear ice cleats as we make our way onto the frozen lake with your guide taking you to some of the best and safest spots in the area. Not sure about skating? You can easily take off the blades and put on the ice cleats to enjoy the ice bubbles while the rest of your group tries skating.

Don’t miss out on the unforgettable experience of skating on the wild ice of Abraham Lake this winter. Book your adventure today and make sure to bring your camera!

Head out for an adventure in search of ice bubbles

Get the best experience by heading out with local guides on our classic ice walk on Abraham Lake. Your guide will take you to one of the best spots on the lake for ice bubbles and quirky ice formations. Where we go depends on the conditions but Preacher’s Point, Abraham Slabs and Hoodoo Creek are some of our favourites for this tour.

Ice cleats, a professional guide and our made-from-scratch hot chocolate and marshmallows are all included.

Your adventure begins with a short walk down the shoreline, taking you through a section with interesting ice blocks and features, where the ice has been left resting on the rocks below while the water levels drop throughout the winter.

You’ll then experience walking on the ice, getting down to take a closer look at the ice bubbles and cracks. The strong winds keep the ice clear all winter, and on the occasional snowy day, it’s light enough to simply brush it away. The features change throughout the season, with the clearest ice shortly after freeze-up and more textured ice later in the year. No matter when you visit, there’s something magical about lying down on the ice and taking in the awe-inspiring views all around us.

    Choosing Your Tour Time

We offer three options for your tour. The 9:30 am tour is the best option for those who prefer a quieter time on the lake. The 1 pm tour is the most convenient if you’re staying in Banff or Lake Louise. The 4 pm tour offers the best chance to catch one of those famous mountain sunsets, wrapping up as the stars start to appear.

This tour is available as a private tour daily and as a scheduled public tour on select days throughout the season.

Two of our favourites in one tour

Winter in Alberta’s West Country is magical. This tour takes you to two of our favourite spots: the ice bubbles of Abraham Lake and the narrow canyon of the Cline River.

First up is a winter hike or snowshoe (depending on snow conditions) through the lodgepole pine forest as we make our way to a viewpoint overlooking the Cline River Canyon. We’ll then make our way down into the canyon, walking along a frozen creek, to enjoy a snack surrounded by icefalls. On most days you’ll get to watch ice climbers work their way up the canyon walls.

The afternoon is spent on Abraham Lake, hunting for ice bubbles, quirky ice formations and taking in the views from the frozen lake.

A picnic lunch, hiking poles, snowshoe rentals (if needed), ice cleats and a professional guide are all included.
