Abraham Lake Ice Conditions – February 3 2021

Home » Abraham Lake Ice Conditions – February 3 2021

The beginning of February always means more snow and longer days. As usual, we’re starting to see a change in the ice and bubbles this week.

We had some light rain on February 1st, but nothing compared to February 1, 2020 when we had over 5 cm of rainwater on top of the ice.

This kicked off the change of ice, as we go from the clean ice of January to the more textured ice of February. The bubbles start to take on a bluer colour and new cracks form along with interesting ice features we don’t get to see earlier in the season.

February also means more snow and true to form, we had a light dusting over the past couple of days. Bring a broom with you and go on a search for ice bubbles, or, make your life easier and head out with a guide who knows where to find them.

Ice conditions have been great, despite the warm January we’ve had. We have well over 22 cm of clear strong ice in all the areas we use for our tours.

While conditions on the lake have been stable, the shorelines are as usual where most accidents happen. Bring ice cleats, a hiking pole or strong stick and be careful as you walk on the ice that is on the shore.
